...this is one you will all know...

Julia Donaldson

Julia Donaldson

It just came through my letterbox: a book of poems for children, chosen by Julia Donaldson [ she wrote The Gruffalo ] and illustrated by Clare Melinsky. It was fun to choose poems old and new to decorate. The use of black and white throughout gives it a classic quality. And £10 for a hardback is a bargain.

Spring Fling Exhibition 25th-27th May 2013

Spring Fling Exhibition 25th-27th May 2013

As a member of Spring Fling I am participating in this year's Open Studios event in Dumfries and Galloway, Southwest Scotland, during the May Bank Holiday. For its biggest event yet, Spring Fling 2013 will see 93 artists and makers open their doors to the public over the weekend.
A small press, ink and a roller will be ready for any visitor to make their own print from one of my lino cuts.
Once again I am sharing Jane Blair's lovely studio in Tynron, not far from where I live. Jane paints in large, almost abstract oils, the colours and moods of the landscape and the beasts which inhabit it.

Two book covers that I illustrated recently for Fi Martynoga aka Fiona Houston, published by www.saraband.net.
Fi enthusiastically bemoans the evils of the modern diet. In The Garden Cottage Diaries she immerses herself in the 1790's for a whole year.
I do pick nettle tops in spring to jazz up my frozen spinach, but for Fi it is a way of life. Respect.
Hawthorn sandwich anyone?

February 2013 Workshops

February 2013 Workshops

I will be introducing the students to Easycut lino which, as it sounds, is easier for beginners who want to get quick results. We use artist's quality tools and ink from Lawrence www.lawrence.co.uk whose materials I have been using for over thirty years.

Your chance to dip into the back catalogue: Clare has been invited to exhibit a wall of work at Thomas Tosh, in their spacious gallery in Thornhill. Framed and unframed lino cuts printed by the artist are for sale throughout February 2012.
Clare has been living and working near Thornhill, Dumfriesshire in South West Scotland for more than thirty years. Her everyday work is illustration, commissioned for books, magazines and packaging. Local interest in her new Harry Potter book covers, published in 2010, has encouraged her to exhibit in this unusual building with its gift shop and popular cafe´.
Clare will be running two workshops at Thomas Tosh during the exhibition introducing beginners to lino cutting and printmaking.
